In 1992 the Philippine government set standards for Theological education for the first time and BTC applied for government recognition of its A.B./Theology degree. BTC was the first school in Central Philippines to be granted permanent recognition for A.B. Theology. Again in 1997 CGST was the first school in the Visayas to receive permanent recognition for MA/Theology, M.Div., and MARE degrees.
With the changing ministry scene in the Philippines and Asia, some students now wish to have their Bible College degrees upgraded to government-recognized degrees. This allows them to receive Special Order number from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) that shows the degree is equal to all of the other colleges and universities recognized in the country. It also allows to pursue higher education in seminaries, colleges and universities throughout the country.
Churches that want to sponsor a preschool or Christian school need leaders with government-recognized degrees to administer those programs. Filipino foreign missionaries often need government-recognized degrees to minister abroad.
The CHED quality evaluation team that visited BTCCGST encouraged us to develop a program to allow non-CHED graduates to UPGRADE their degree. That UPGRADE program continues until this school year!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about UPGRADING your degree.
1. How can graduates of other Bible Colleges or non-CHED schools receive a government-recognized degree?
BTC/CGST welcomes students from other Bible colleges provided they have completed a bachelor’s degree. The BTC Dean of Theology will evaluate each student’s work and allow credit for subjects already completed in another quality school. Students enroll for subjects they have not already completed.
2. Will I have to become a full-time student again to complete this program?
Students who finished non-CHED theological degrees will take special UPGRADE subjects to complete their AB/Theology requirements. Some subjects will involve independent study, reading and reporting. On campus classes will have block-class scheduling.
3. When will I have classes?
During summer special UPGRADE block classes will be offered for all students in the program. They must be on campus for classes. Classes will begin at 8a.m. and last until 9p.m. When students are not in class they will be doing research and study in the Learning Resource Center.
4. Where will I live during my studies on campus at BTC/CGST?
Students from Metro Cebu can commute daily if they choose. Dorm-style housing will be available on campus. Students may purchase food at nearby inexpensive carenderias. No cooking facilities will be available during the summer.
5. What subjects will I take?
Each student’s program will be unique. He/she will take only those subjects needed to meet the minimum standards of the government to receive an A.B/Theology degree. Students will major either in Pastoral Ministry or Religious Education, depending upon their prior major in Bible college.
6. How long will this take?
Most students will be able to complete their UPGRADE program in one to two years. They will come to the BTC campus only in the summer.
